Breakout Sessions

Breakout session is a feature of Training Center that allows the attendees of a training session to form sub-groups (breakout sessions).

As most features in the main training session are available for the breakout sessions, the UI of the breakout session looks very similar to the main session. The challenge is to design the UI of the breakout session that can immediately communicate to the user that he/she is in the breakout session, not the main training session, but yet is similar enough to the main session.

Solution

The first attempt to design this UI is to indicate the current session (main or breakout) by the text in title bar and other places. However, after some quick user tests, we found that this is not sufficient. A much higher visual contrast is needed for the user to distinguish the breakout session from the main training session. Based on this, the following design decisions were made:

• Use a different color scheme for some of the UI elements such as title bar, text title, panel headers etc. The color green is used as it is one of the official colors in the WebEx brand identity.
• Display a Breakout Panel on the right hand side, with text that notifies the user that this is a breakout session. There is a button on that panel to return to the main training session.
